Job purpose

Within the department of Manufacturing Technology Development and Services, the Automation Engineer will cooperate with colleagues from different areas to complete the assigned projects bringing his contribute of specific professional know-how and of personal skills. He will support other functions contributing in establishing high engineering standard to continuously improve Safety, Quality, Efficiency, and Operative methods. He will get involved in projects and operations and will take personal commitment in delivering according and beyond the demands that will be defined time by time. Personal and professional progression will be defined based on results and potentials.


Main responsibilities

It will evolve from purely operative engineering tasks (design, installation, start-up of equipment, debugging of processes, deployment of automation software) to more sophisticated project management tasks with possibility and need for ranging on several technical areas including manufacturing processes and industrial engineering.

Initially it is considered the introduction in the so called L1L2 Center of Excellence with the purpose to support the deployment and implementation of standard software applications based on corporate platforms and solutions referred as Smart Factory.

Everything included in Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems as defined by ISA95-ISO/IEC62264 is in scope.

Below list is just indicative and not exhaustive of the possible knowledge areas and activities in which the Automation Engineer might be engaged:

  • Collect requirements to specify industrial machines to be installed in BS plants.
  • Design and development of hardware and software architecture for industrial machines based on given requirements and specification.
  • Control software development will also include developing machine control algorithms for PLC based systems, HMI design and implementation, instrumentation and sensor interface, data logging, and communication interfaces with other appliances.
  • Proficient understanding of basic machine controls including electric actuators, motors, electronic controllers, hydraulic/pneumatics and valve controls. 
  • Commissioning of new equipment, including deployment, testing and preparing related documentation (PLC Code, HMI applications, Bill of Materials, Network Architectures, Drawing, Operations manuals, Maintenance Manuals).
  • Debugging / fixing issues that are reported from users.
  • Maintain product safety in all designs. 
  • Perform design prototyping, including field implementing and testing 
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of communication networks and wiring issues with PLCs and other H/W components.
  • Design, architect, standardize, document and support the stability, reliability, uptime, high availability, performance, scalability, security and integrity of manufacturing applications (Wonderware System Platform, Wonderware Historian, and InTouch systems).
  • Develop engineering standards that help streamline engineering processes as well as increase the efficiency/effectiveness of project execution for horizontal expansions leveraging advanced tools.
  • Understand application lifecycle management and plan migration process
  • Support management on intellectual property issues.
  • Check and confirm of profitability of investments in Automation of processes.


Working Position

Functional reporting to Manufacturing Technology Development and Services department in Rome Technical Center.

Frequent travels to BSEMIA sites, possible travels to Bridgestone sites outside of EMIA.

For candidates already working for BSEMIA, if selected, it is considered the possibility to work remotely from their original site when not in business trip to Rome or other BSEMIA sites (no mandatory relocation).

Required capabilities

Technical background

  • University degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronic or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Bachelor’s degree or University degree in different area can be an option upon already acquired and demonstrable specific job experience.
  • Principles of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Principles of Reliability Engineering.



  • Fluent English required.
  • Other EU languages are a plus.


Core competency skills

  • PLC/HMI: Rockwell, Mitsubishi, Siemens.
  • Understanding of Hydraulics/Pneumatics as well as AC Drives and Motion Controls.
  • Software Design and Development experience.
  • Ability to read Electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Understanding of various communication protocols (Profibus, Ethernet IP, OPC, …).
  • Strong hands-on hardware troubleshooting and software debugging skills.
  • Familiarity with PC Programming Languages
  • SQL skills are a plus (MSSQL and Oracle)

It is not an expectancy to having all the above set of capabilities already developed at high level.

What is expected is candidate ability to learn will make him possible approaching problems requiring the above capabilities and to deploy them as required. 



  • Work experience in Manufacturing environment is a welcome plus and might make the difference for internal candidates.
  • Experience with AVEVA System Platform (formerly Wonderware) concepts and products (Archestra, Historian Server and Clients, InTouch HMI / OMI) is also a plus.
