ABOUT THE ROLE

Bridgestone is seeking a talented and qualified competition law expert lawyer to join its West Ethics and Compliance team. We are looking for candidates who have a strong understanding of competition laws and regulations, as well as the ability to provide legal advice to Bridgestone's business units on competition law matters and other ethics and compliance related matters. The role will also involve conducting competition law risk assessments, developing competition law training materials and guidance, advising on competition law aspects of transactions, and helping with other areas of the ethics and compliance program. We have a strong preference for this role to be based in Brussels, but we will consider exceptional candidates who are located elsewhere in Europe. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Corporate Compliance and West Antitrust, and will work closely with Bridgestone’s Associate General Counsel for Antitrust and Corporate Compliance, based in the United States, in advancing Bridgestone’s West Competition Law Compliance Program.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide practical and informed legal advice and counsel to Bridgestone's business units and lawyers in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region on competition law matters, including transactions, trade association involvement and competitive intelligence;
  • Conduct competition law risk assessments, including proactively identifying new risks facing the organization and helping to create strategies to manage and minimize risk;
  • Continuously monitor effectiveness and further develop competition law compliance policies, controls, training materials and communications, including providing training to teammates;
  • Stay up to date on competition laws and regulations in Europe and globally;
  • Identify and analyze competition law trends, with a focus on the industries in which Bridgestone operates;
  • Work effectively and efficiently with outside counsel, as needed, including coordinating the work of all outside counsel supporting Bridgestone on competition law matters throughout EMEA, and working with internal stakeholders as needed to ensure that any relevant information or data is provided to outside counsel in a comprehensive and timely manner;
  • Conduct internal investigations involving competition law and other compliance related matters, and coordinate the company’s activities in relation to any external investigations by regulators relating to competition law;
  • Representing Bridgestone with regulators in any competition law matters, including coordinating and participating to meetings, responding to requests, or engaging in other communications;
  • Engage with senior leaders and other business leaders, and develop support and buy-in for the competition law compliance program and the ethics and compliance program;
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with other members of the Bridgestone West Ethics and Compliance Team, supporting other areas of the ethics and compliance program including compliance-related sustainability matters and reporting, oversight of program roll-out in specific entities, etc.

 

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to the bar in a European country;
  • 10+ years of experience practicing competition law;
  • Strong understanding of competition laws and regulations;
  • An excellent track record of developing a deep understanding of the different businesses, and developing strong relationships with different functional areas;
  • Ability to navigate ambiguous situations, operate under pressure with diligence, organization, and minimal supervision;
  • Excellent legal writing and research skills, as well the ability to provide clear and concise legal advice;
  • Ability to engage diverse audiences and translate complex legal and economic concepts into simple and understandable guidance and training;
  • A team focused and growth mindset.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with international competition law matters;
  • Experience working in multi-jurisdictional teams;
  • Experience working for the EU Commission or other competition law enforcement authority, a law firm renowned for its competition law practice or for a mature global corporation;
  • Experience dealing directly with the EU Commission or other competition law enforcement authorities, including within the scope of investigations and merger fillings
