Job Title
Shift Supervisor
The Person
The person will ideally lead by example, capable of working with and supervising tyre fitters, be capable of performing some administrative duties, appreciate their role in delivering customer service, possess common sense and initiative, demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop their managerial skills and knowledge.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
• Grade 12 National Certificate
• A valid and appropriate light vehicle driver’s licence (South African Code 08) Good communication skills and customer service skills
• Ability to work for extended hours and physically fit
• Sound understanding of the working mechanism of the tools or the machinery they are handling
• Look after the maintenance of the equipment
• Expert written communication skills, good supervisory skills and ability to pay attention to the details
• Three years of Earthmover tyre fitting experience
Preferred:
• Coaching and mentoring certificate
• 1 Year supervisory experience
Reports to
Senior Shift Supervisor / Site Supervisor / Contract Manager
Duties
The following is a general list of tasks that a Shift Supervisor is required to perform. The Company may add to or vary these duties from time to time provided the variation is reasonable having regard to the employee’s skills, competence and training.
• Ensure that tyre fitters comply with Otraco Management System (OMS) policies, procedures and instructions
• Lead tyre fitters to perform tyre fitting and workshop maintenance tasks in the most efficient, safe and cost effective manner
• Perform corrective action requests from auditors
• Check that data critical to Otracom is provided accurately and on time
• Lead the tyre fitters in performing equipment calibration procedures according to the OMS
• Perform inspections and determine if components should be scrapped, repaired or remain in service
• Mount and strip any type of tyre and wheel/rim assembly according to procedures
• Repair tyres and tubes according to procedures
• Operate forklifts and tyre handlers according to procedures
• Lead tyre fitters in maintaining tyre operating pressures in accordance with site specifications
• Lead tyre fitters in maintaining a high quality of service to the client
• Present himself in a condition fit to perform his duties,
• Perform assessment of subordinates to analyse competence / gaps in training (i.e. Planned Task Observation)
Safety
Shift Supervisors are required to:
• Induct new personnel into the workplace
• Ensure that all personnel work safely and follow Occupational Health and Safety Procedures
• Ensure that all personnel comply with site “lock out” / “tag out” procedures
• Investigate hazards, unsafe work conditions and equipment reported and take action to eliminate or reduce the risk to acceptable levels
• Investigate and report all incidents and injuries according to procedures
• Comply with applicable instructions documented in the OMS Safety Plan
• Ensure that tyre fitters use and maintain Person Protective Equipment according to procedures
Job Description
• Ensure that tyre fitters perform vehicle pre-start checks according to procedures
• Promote workplace safety by participating in meetings and conducting inspections in order to improve safety in the workplace and document accordingly
• Ensure that incident notices and safety information is communicated to tyre fitters
• Perform Job Hazard Analysis and take control actions to reduce the risk of injury or damage to equipment
• Perform Planned Task Observations and report deviations. Ensure that corrective actions are performed
• Maintain and review Safe Work Procedures / Otraco Best Practice Procedures and ensure they are understood and used by all tyre fitters
• Comply with the site emergency evacuation procedures

• Compulsory elective
o ID 12213: Select and use automobile lifting equipment, Level 2, 3 credits.
o ID 9868: Demonstrate knowledge of, and rectify faults in, motor vehicle tyres and wheels, Level 3, 7 credits.
o ID 9867: Remove and replace wheels and tyres, and balance wheels, Level 2, 2 credits.
o ID 9869: Repair punctures and fit tyres to wheels, Level 3, 9 credits.
• Additional electives o ID 9864: Repair and replace light and heavy commercial vehicle tyres, Level 3, 17 credits. o ID 256176: Remove and replace off-the-road (OTR) wheels and tyres, Level 2, 8 credits. o ID 9865: Remove and replace wheels and tyres from industrial machines and equipment, Level 3, 10 credits.
• Complete additional in-house training as required
